Art in the Park 2019 - In honor of late local artist and activist Mary Ellen Croteau

posted Aug 3, 2019, 10:55 AM by UPAC UPAC

This year's Art in the Park will tackle environmentalism, specifically addressing the danger that non-recyclable plastic poses to the environment. The event is co-ordinated by Amie Sell, and honors late local artist Mary Ellen Croteau, a friend and mentor of Sell's. Croteau's husband, Steve Bild, is part of the 2019 AITP organizing committee and is donating Croteau's unused collection of plastic caps to be used in a community participatory art making project at the event.

But we need even more caps, so please bring your cleaned plastic bottle caps to the event!
  • Bring your caps - we'll get the rest of the art supplies!
  • Wear painting and crafts clothes.
  • Kids always have a blast at Art in the Park!

And look who else is coming! AnySquared's Tracy Kostenbader and her artistic friends! DJ El Rebel X, AKA Victor Montañez, returning with his unique blend of multi genre music and beat! Sponsors AnySquared, State Senator Iris Y. Martinez, Vicki Logan, and Richard H. Frye Remodeling Contractor Inc. And all your neighbors!

You Never Know What a Plastic Cap Can Do!

We intend to show you at this year's ART in the Park when we use collected plastic caps of all sizes and colors to create a community art-making participation project and we need YOUR help! We ask that you please start saving your plastic caps, CLEAN them, and then bring them to ART in the PARK on Saturday, July 13th at 10 AM and, believe us, you will be amazed at what they can become!

A Little Free Library is coming to Unity Park!

On Saturday, June 1st at 10:30 AM, we'll have a small parade of the Library into the park, an official "welcome" read, and then local children will unwrap the Little Library! A special performance of story-themed songs and story telling by Actor/Musician Joe Boersma will follow the unveiling. Friends of Logan Square Library and UPAC will have activities for the crowd, and free books and goodies for children. And, the first 50 children to bring a book to donate will receive a special commemorative Little Library button!

Please bring ONE children's book for the Little Library, in English or Spanish, as both a donation and to signal their commitment to seeing the LIttle Library grow and become a community resource.

The Little Library at Unity Park is a project of the Unity Park Advisory Council , and is made possible through the generosity of The Chicago Reader, Upcycling Colors, Zosimo Melendez, Monarch Thrift Shop, State Representative Will Guzzardi, and State Senator Iris Y. Martinez. If you wish to donate books for the Little Library, please contact UPAC, or bring them to State Senator Iris Y. Martinez's office on a Wednesday.
